The pastoral ministry of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in Italy is a ministry of presence, communion, and hope, accompanying migrants, students, and families living in Rome, Naples, Padova, and Sicily, who carry with them the rich spiritual and liturgical heritage of their Church from Kerala. Though small in number, the community finds strength and belonging through the celebration of the West Syriac liturgical tradition, where the liturgy becomes a source of grace, the community becomes family, and the Church reveals her maternal face by listening, consoling, and walking with her faithful far from their homeland.
The pastoral ministry of the Syro-Malankara Catholic diaspora community should be grounded in faith, fraternity, and fellowship, while giving due consideration to the contemporary realities and cultural dynamism of each country.
Pastoral ministry among immigrants in Malta has been a deeply spiritual and grace-filled experience, especially in accompanying people away from their homeland and witnessing the growth of the Syro-Malankara Catholic community into a vibrant faith family. At the same time, challenges remain as many are young individuals who often move between groups according to friendships and personal preferences, and since Malta does not easily offer permanent residency, there are fewer settled families and more individuals, which affects the stability and long-term growth of the community.
Wherever our Malankara Catholic people migrate, it is not by accident but by God’s loving plan, who places each family in a particular country for a purpose. I encourage every new migrant to be thankful, to discern the divine plan unfolding in their new land, and to see their presence there as a mission entrusted by the Lord. When they join the Malankara community in that country, they find strength, identity, and a spiritual home to live their faith joyfully. May every migrant become a missionary of hope and a witness of Christ in their new surroundings.
